First, let's figure out what kind of martini we are talking about. Bacardi Martini's huge alcohol portfolio includes traditional Italian Martini vermouth (Bianco, Rossa, Extra Dry) and has been producing it since 1863. Vermouth is a fortified herb-flavored wine; it is usually served in a low, bulky container, such as a rocks or old fashion glass. Since these glasses have a fairly large area for cooling, vermouth is drunk with ice in an increased serving portion.

A martini cocktail glass or, in other words, martini glass is intended for medium-sized cocktails without ice. The most common mistake Russian-speaking bartenders make is pouring Martini vermouth into a martini cocktail glass. Let's figure out how it happened that two objects have the same name, but absolutely do not interact with each other.

The history of martini glasses

So that once and for all vermouth and cocktail glassware have nothing in common in our minds, it is necessary to understand how it happened historically that the name is the same.
The Martini drink takes its name from the name of its inventor, Alessandro Martini, who, together with Luigi Rossi, in 1863 introduced the world to the first sample of Italian vermouth of a new composition from the Martini distillery. In 1879, the partners opened a factory for the production of this drink and registered the Martini&Rossi trademark. Since 1992, the brand has been owned by the famous Bacardi company, registered in Bermuda.

The exact date of the appearance of the triangular cocktail glass is unknown. In the sources, its appearance dates back to the 19th century, and its official presentation took place only in 1925 at a modern exhibition of decorative and applied arts in Paris. And here the Martini brand and its marketing activities have tried. The most popular cocktail that flashed on every screen in the world is the dry martini in the hands of James Bond. And many thought that Agent 007 simply drinks vermouth, because martini is vermouth. But the dry martini cocktail includes 60 ml of gin and only 10 ml of dry vermouth. That is, it is added to the cocktail only for light aroma.

Types of glasses

The martin can be for one serving of a cocktail or a double serving. As for design, there are a great many variations and varieties. Conventionally, we can distinguish classic martini glass, with curved (unusually shaped) legs, and slightly rounded ones, very reminiscent of the glasses in which champagne is served - chalets.

Anatomically, the shape of the glass is a triangle, pointed towards the bottom, flaunting on a high stem. This type of glass not only attracts the eye, but also performs important functionality.

This shape allows the drink to maintain its temperature - the hand holding the glass does not heat it up. The highly expanded upper part allows you to use the upper lip and nose when sipping, which allows you to fully enjoy the flavor of the cocktail. An important point: you don’t need to drink from a cocktail glass through a straw, because in this case 70% of the aroma of the cocktail is lost.

The volume of drinks served in this glass ranges from 70 to 160 milliliters, but glassware manufacturers can make limited edition glasses of larger sizes.

Criteria for choosing glasses

First, you need to decide on the volume of drinks that will be served in it. Next, define the general concept. If the establishment is made in the “Speakeasy” style, it is worth taking vintage dishes with a high leg (preferably, with crystal elements and carved decor). If the establishment is more laconic, then the strict shape of the glass will perfectly emphasize minimalism and restraint and will perfectly highlight the taste of the cocktail. Intricate legs and thin walls will fit perfectly into an establishment with ornate cuisine and presentation.

Thus, when choosing martini cocktail glasses, the following are important:

  • volume of dishes;
  • visual, in accordance with the concept of the establishment;
  • glass manufacturer quality;
  • price.

Today, glass manufacturers are trying to diversify their range as much as possible, so everyone can find something most suitable for their establishment and drinks.

Submission rules

Martini cocktail glass is designed for serving medium-sized cocktails without ice. This means that a good portion of classic and signature cocktails can end up in this glass. The ingredients are first mixed in a shaker or mixing glass, and then, already cooled, poured intocut a strainer (sieve) into a glass.

In addition to the above, cocktails with ice cannot be served in a martinka; a very rare exception are liqueurs with frappe ice. Liqueurs in their pure form are very sweet. Their sugar content ranges from 150 to 500 grams per liter, so they can be sprinkled with crushed ice and served with a small straw to reduce the concentration of sweetness. But this is very rare.

Typically, in a martinka you can see such famous cocktails as: daiquiri, Paradise, Alexander or Cosmopolitan from the popular film “Sex and the City”.

The martini glass has a rich history. All famous personalities have at least once drank drinks from this graceful, elegant glass. Its main goal and purpose is to help reveal incredible flavor and aroma combinations made especially for us by industry virtuosos.
