Cola de Mono is a traditional Chilean drink that is drunk on Christmas and New Year's Eve. Literally translated, the name means “monkey’s tail,” and the most plausible version of the origin is that in the presidential elections, challenger Pedro Mont lost by a narrow margin, and it was called Mont’s tail (Cola de Mont). An enterprising ice cream maker came up with an alcoholic drink based on milk and coffee and called it a popular phrase to attract attention. The drink is still popular, but over time the name changed to “Cola de Mono”.
