Sbiten is a hot drink, indispensable in the cold Russian climate. In winter, this is the best way to keep warm. Everyone drank sbiten, regardless of status and financial situation, and it was served not only in taverns. Sbitenshchiki (sellers of sbiten) walked along the streets with huge vessels, similar to samovars, on their backs, wrapped in warm fabric.
There are quite a few recipes for sbiten: they differ in both the method of preparation and the ingredients. Sbiten is drunk in the same way as tea. But since it's already sweet, it's best paired with savory snacks and treats.
